As mentioned throughout this blog, Bumble Bee has two golden predecessors: Abby and Libby. Both of those names end in “bby,” so I thought to include that sound in Bee’s name to continue the tradition. First, I made a list. I combined every constanent and every vowel with “bby” to see if anything worked. Ex. Babby, Cabby, Dabby and so on. The only option I liked was Bubby, but I felt it was more of a nickname. I had a list of names that I liked outside of “bby.” One name on the list was Honey Bee; but I knew that I was getting a boy dog, and I didn’t feel the name worked for a boy. I thought Bee on its own was too short. Then, one day I was watching Transformers, and the name Bumble Bee clicked. For so many reasons, it was the name meant to “bee.” I was able to honor my previous dogs by keeping the name in the same sound family. I was able to use the nickname “bubby” which was the only “bby” combination I liked. Even more, golden retrievers are yellow fluffy dogs, just like a bumblebee. I got myself a lil bee, and I am so happy to have chosen the name. Every time I see Bee, he reminds me of Libby and Abby, and I am so grateful to have honored them in his name.
